About Todd A. Smith

Professional architectural photographer Todd A. Smith of Alexandria,VA has practiced his craft for the past 14 years, following 20 years of service as a United States Marine.

Todd's approach to photography is to look for the interesting angles each structure presents.  This is what won him an award for a photograph of the Atomic Dome in Hiroshima, Japan.  He found his own angle, one that the local photographers and tourists never use, and created a unique, one of a kind photograph that amazed even the Japanese photographers.   Todd's talent won him a membership in the prestigious Otake Shayukai Club in Otake, Japan.  He is one of only two non-Japanese photographers ever to be invited to join.

Todd has had an affinity for architectural photography since grade school.  He credits this with growing up in Columbus, WI and going downtown with his parents to the Louis Sullivan-designed Farmer's and Merchants Union Bank, Sullivan's last "Jewel Box" bank.  Columbus also boasts other architectural treasures, a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home, a public library designed by another former Sullivan student, Louise W. Claude, and a picturesque City Hall designed by T. D. Allen of Minneapolis, MN.  In addition, Columbus, WI has a variety of other architectural styles of buildings and homes including Italianate, Gothic Revival, Romanesque and Queen Anne.

When not taking architectural photographs, Todd enjoys photographing fine art, landscape, street and equine photography. He is an exhibiting member and recipient of numerous Honorable Mentions from the Art League Gallery, Alexandria, VA.
